If we were to link from a blog post on the Tortoise and Hare website to your website that would count as a backlink to your website. You want to increase the number of unique referring domains (backlinks from unique websites) to your website in order to supplement content production efforts and rank higher.
Not all backlinks are created equal though. While not always true, a good way to think about it is that only links from websites more authoritative than yours are going to move the needle. As you grow your own websites authority you need higher quality backlinks to continue to climb and grow traffic.
Not all backlinks are created equal. A backlink from a high authority high traffic website like Forbes is more valuable than a backlink from a local small business. Publishers know this and charge higher rates for these premium backlinks. Therefore we must charge higher rates to procure these types of links.
As your business matures and grows its own authority, the need for premium backlinks increase and the value of standard backlinks to you business decreases.
